How To Bake Your First Ever Perfect Cake

Hi there! It’s me. Frankly, I have been away for so long that I don’t know where to start. Maybe we should start over with a recipe that will help you bake your first ever perfect cake. Sounds fun right?

Even though I put up step by step recipes for cakes, I figured that some of you are venturing into the world of baking for the first time and would need a little more assistance. And those of you who have been baking for some time but need more consistent results with your cake, you could try this recipe too.

So here it is. This post will be your guide to creating your first ever perfect cake. No eggs, no fancy equipment, no complicated steps or gourmet ingredients that are hard to find. All you need is one bowl and a whisk and I promise that you will be extremely proud of your creation. In case, you are dairy intolerant or vegan, just substitute the portion of milk with equal portion of water or soy milk. In short there is no reason you cannot bake this cake. Ha!

Let’s get going.

Here is what we need:

For the greasing your cake pan:

  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp canola oil (add more oil if the paste is too thick)

For the cake:

  • 1 ¼ flour
  • 1 cup castor sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1/3 cup canola oil
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup instant hot coffee (use 1 1/2 tsp of any instant coffee in half cup boiling water)
  • 1 tsp vinegar

Note: Measure out the milk in a cup and add the vinegar and vanilla. Let it stand aside for a minute or two while you sift together the dry ingredients.

Method:

Pre-heat the oven to 180 degree Celsius. If you do not have an automatic setting for pre-heating. You can manually pre-heat your oven for 10 minutes.

For absolute beginners, here is a set of measuring spoons. You can buy this at Ali Express or at a local grocery store. But, use these when measuring for baking. I am so glad we had this chat.

Grease an 8 inch baking pan by making a paste of butter, canola oil and flour. If you have parchment paper, use it. It will ensure that your cake never sticks to the bottom of the pan. But if you don’t have parchment paper, just grease your baking pan very generously with the paste. You will be fine.

Sift the flour…Do not be lazy…Sift!

And then the castor sugar.

Throw in the cocoa powder. I use Cadbury’s but you can use any brand of your choice.

Sifting is scared and it really makes a difference.

Add the baking soda and the salt.

Next goes the baking powder.

Whisk everything to mix all the dry ingredients thoroughly.

Pour in the canola oil.

Whisk in the oil. The texture will be crumbly.

Pour in the hot coffee. If you do not like coffee, you can simply use hot water. But, trust me…coffee takes the depth and flavour of chocolate to a whole new level.

Add the vinegar to the milk

And the vanilla.

Add the milk to the batter.

Whisk the batter for 2-3 minutes until it becomes uniform and glossy. That’s it! You are done.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake for 35 minutes.

    I’ll bake this one soon…have never tried coffee in my cake before. But since I’ve been following you, I know it must make a difference. Also, my husband loves your mystery paratha..so wanted to especially thank you for that recipe. :-)
