How To Have Your Cake and Keep Fit Too!

As a person who bakes a lot of cakes, I am often asked this question. Well! there is no definite way to do it but there are right ways to approach this situation. If I had to tell you my way, it would be ‘Love your body and listen to it’. Sounds easy but is a lot more work than you think. That is because we are hard wired to criticize our bodies, thanks to television and magazines.

I am absolutely no expert on fitness but I can tell you a few things which I learned from my own experience. In November 2014, I injured my knee while working out. It took me a while to realize that it wasn’t one of those fatigue pains or something. I kept thinking it would go away with a few sessions of physiotherapy except that it didn’t. I was limping and my world was upside down. I always keep myself engaged into some physical activity but now I could not walk, jog, run, dance or do yoga. Nothing!

That’s when I learned to be grateful for what I had.  For 27 years, I had a perfectly functional body enabling me to do anything but I never cared too much about it.  So, if you are pain and injury free, let me remind you how blessed you are. You can do anything you want: run, trek, dance or go for a long walk with your special someone. Here are a few things that might help you to have your cake and keep fit too.

  1. You either love your body or you don’t- Your first step to fitness is to be grateful for your wonderful body. Love it the way it is. Love it at the fitness level where it is right now. If you think you are too skinny, love your skinny self. If you think you are overweight, then love your overweight self.Loving your body has a lot less to do with your weight, shape or size than you think.  We all have met those skinny people who are complaining about how they need to lose weight. But, they are not lying. They actually feel that they need to lose just a bit more weight to get to their ideal body shape, just like how we always like that one dress and think that if we buy it, we will be perfectly satisfied. We won’t need another dress cz this one’s it! We all know how that goes.
  2. Every next meal is an opportunity to stay fit- We shell out a lot of money in buying beauty and cosmetic products. So, if you are giving your exterior the best that you can, why not the same to your interior? You know that the cheese burst  margherita pizza with extra cheese is not the best thing you can give to your body. So, what is it? Figure it out and apply on your next meal. Don’t wait for a new year or a Monday. Just start already.
  3. Don’t give up on your body- We are in too much of a hurry to quantify our fitness goals. Get a six pack, lose 5 kilos, reduce 3 inches and so on. To be fair, I am very very guilty of doing this myself. I still do it sometimes. Old habits die hard. What usually happens is that we start eating healthy and then due to one reason or the other, we have a week of eating all things wrong. Then, we give up. “Oh what the hell! I am never gonna make it, so might as well eat more crap”. Don’t. Read point no.2.
  4. There is no such thing as detox- Please do not fall in the detox trap. You cannot abuse your body and then do a detox to bring it back to where it was. That never happens. I don’t think this point needs any proof but if you want, go read about it.  Try to eat right every day. Be mindful of what you are putting in your mouth.
  5. Listen to your body- It’s time to face the facts. I used to eat a lot of junk 7 years ago and not put on so much weight. Nor, did I feel uneasy after a heavy meal. However, make me have a big dinner now and I can’t sleep. I cannot eat like a 21 year old anymore because I am not 21 years old anymore. Your body talks to you ALL THE TIME. You just don’t listen to it or you choose to ignore. Start identifying what kind of foods make you feel good and which ones make you feel uneasy, acidic, bloated or simply guilty. This goes the opposite way too. If you are feeling hungry and dizzy and weak, then eat. Do not starve yourself.
  6. Stop fighting with your body- Realize that you are your body. Your body is not separate from you. If you are hating and fighting with your body, you are hating and fighting with yourself. You cannot take care of something you hate and fight with all the time. Stop telling your body how disappointed you are with it. If you ate that extra slice of cake or that extra scoop of ice-cream, then let it be. Move on. Go back to point no. 2 again.

Love your body. Be gentle to it. Listen to it. Nourish it. Cherish it. Celebrate it. Live in harmony with it. Stop fighting with it.

I hurt my knee playing soccer too. It has been slow, but it is healing slowly. I absolutely am sorry for you. Running used to be that one thing that would keep me happy, and not being able to do it is just sad. But you move on, don’t you? I am so glad you wrote this post, and I love the points you have put down. Thank you.
